ABOUT Uplift With Dr. G

Sports have come so far! Today, athletes have access to personal coaches, training programs, athletic trainers, recovery programs, and a vast amount of data and information about their sport. However, one area that has been neglected is the mental side of the game. How an athlete learns and experiences their sport, will affect how they respond to obstacles and hardships in their sport and in life.

In these changing times coaches need to learn how to adapt, if they want to become program builders that can foster meaningful relationships with athletes and produce sustained success. Coaches need to be able to discern what information is helpful and correct. In a time when everyone is trying different things to get ahead, I believe that a return to simplicity and intentional planning can set coaches on a path to success.

As an experienced coach and athletic director, I can be of service in these areas by either helping athletes process their emotions and the mental side of the game, or by helping coaches breakdown the structure of coaching and program-building.

Initial Conversation

When I was just 22 years old, I was named the head varsity soccer coach at El Rancho High School. El Rancho was coming off a legendary run, but its legendary coach and players had moved on. The program was in a time of transition, and everyone expected for our success to end. However, the success did not end. By God’s grace, I was able to gain the trust and respect of my student-athletes and grow alongside them. We accomplished the unthinkable. In 9 years, our program won 6 varsity league titles (two 3-peats), 5 junior varsity league titles, 1 Winter Tournament Championship, and our team made it to the playoffs every year. Twice we finished as second place in our league, and once as third ⎻ never lower. In the playoffs we competed in the highest divisions. In 2017, we made it to the Division 2 quarter-finals. Twice we competed in the Division 1 playoffs - something that El Rancho Soccer had never done before. During my time as coach, our program produced 5 all-league MVPS, and 20 athletes made the jump to college soccer.

Over the last three years I have worked as the Athletic Director at El Rancho. I oversee day-to-day operations for 22 athletic programs, 49 teams, and 90+ coaches! During my time as Athletic Director, two sports have reached the CIF Southern Section Finals: girls volleyball in 2022 and girls soccer in 2023. In 2024, our cheer team won the CIF Southern Section Championship! In addition, our baseball, football, and boys soccer programs continue to be some of the best sport programs in our area. This year I have led our department in another year of transition, as our school is going through a massive construction project. As a result, 17 of our 22 programs have had to play and practice at alternate sites. When the project is finished our school will have a new stadium, a new aquatic center, a new baseball field, a new softball field, and new additional practice areas.

Lastly, during my time as athletic director, I earned my doctorate degree from USC in educational leadership. After 10 years of working as an educator, I am ready to share my experiences with athletes and coaches who want to grow their mental resilience and deepen their understanding of the game they play. As a competitor, I have always enjoyed taking on challenges. As an educator, I love helping others accomplish their goals. I look forward to meeting you!
